Nadsyannya ethnic region in western Ukraine

Traditional neck jewelry of Nadsyannya ethnic region in western Ukraine

Nadsyannya is a Ukrainian ethnic territory in the upper and middle reaches of the San river. The main part of Nadsyannya coincides with the Eastern half of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship of Poland. Within Ukraine, a small fragment of Nadsyannya is located in the extreme west of Lviv region - the northwestern parts of Sambir, Mosty and Yavoriv districts. The historical center is the city of Przemyśl.

The main component was a coral necklace made of mostly large in diameter coral beads or its imitation. Such necklace had from 2 to 15 or more strands. The beads in the rows were laid smaller at the edges and larger in the middle, the size of the beads increased from the top to the bottom row.

In addition to coral beads, there were also glass beads ("painted patsyorky"), or a combination of coral with glass Venetian beads in the center (in Yavoriv region).  As an imitation of coral, red beads made of ceramics were popular.

Also, in Nadsyannya, they created ornaments-syliankas ("kryzas") in the form of a round collar, which were made using the technique of weaving with an openwork texture of grid weaving, or a combination of a woven ribbon at the top with a grid base at the bottom (in the vicinity of Przemyśl). Such beaded decorations were up to 14 cm wide. Two-part sylianka consisted of two parts - a ribbon and a collar, each of which had its own variant of stringing or weaving and ornament. Two-part syliankas were worn in Nadsyannia.

Color scheme of this region is a combination of different colors of matte and transparent beads. In Yavoriv district, the color scheme of beaded jewelry was formed from transparent beads of cherry, red, blue and green tones on a white background.
